Inspiration
The initial idea for this project came from one of my university lecturers who taught Decision Support Systems (DSS)—a core branch of practical AI. Around the same time, I was diving into basic accounting fundamentals, learning how balance sheets work and what truly constitutes a healthy business cash flow.
Seeing these two worlds, I asked myself: How can I blend predictive analytics with practical accounting principles into an intuitive tool for everyday business owners? That spark became the foundation for W-Spread.
What it does
W-Spread is an intelligent cash flow management and Decision Support System (DSS) tailored for small-to-medium businesses (MSMEs). Instead of overwhelming users with raw spreadsheets, W-Spread simplifies financial reporting and cash flow forecasting into clear, actionable insights.
Key features include:
- Automated E-Statement OCR Parsing: Users can upload bank PDF e-statements (such as BCA, Mandiri, or BRI). The backend automatically extracts, categorizes, and logs historical revenue and operating expenses line-by-line.
- Predictive Financial Analytics: Using historical monthly averages for revenue and expenses, the app projects future account balances while accounting for operational risk factors:
- Actionable DSS Insights: Translates complex accounting projections into intuitive visual risk indicators, helping entrepreneurs make fast, confident capital decisions before cash flow bottlenecks occur.
How we built it
Having joined the hackathon with less than two-thirds of the remaining time, I decided to challenge myself by going solo. I acted as the hustler and tech lead, while leveraging my Agentic AI (powered by Claude 3.5 Sonnet in Kiro IDE) as my dedicated hacker.
- Ideation & Architecture: I drafted initial blueprints, narrowed down candidate concepts, and picked W-Spread. I selected JavaScript as the primary ecosystem for rapid development—building a lightweight Express.js REST backend hosted on Vercel, paired with Supabase for database management and auth.
- Prototyping & Slicing: I designed a low-fidelity UI/UX tailored for fast mobile navigation, then worked alongside my AI agent to slice the components into a clean, functional Expo (React Native) mobile prototype.
- Core Engine & Refinement: Together with my AI agent, we structured the database migrations, implemented the backend
pdf-parse/multerOCR pipeline, and established the REST API synchronization paths.
Remarkably, the entire implementation phase was completed in essentially a single high-efficiency AI agent session with about five major handover points.
Challenges we ran into
Building this under tight constraints came with its fair share of hurdles:
- Scope & Context Friction: In the planning phase, IDE biases and overly broad initial prompts caused delays. I had to quickly pivot to granular context tagging (
@File) to keep execution sharp. - Branding & Visual Identity: Finding a distinct visual color palette was tricky—several great color combinations I tested felt too close to existing fintech apps.
- Debugging Under Pressure: Truthfully, during implementation, I spent more time wrestling with runtime errors and identity sync bugs than writing fresh feature code! But staying optimistic through every broken build kept the project moving forward.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am incredibly proud to see W-Spread fully functional and meeting every single design goal I laid out.
Building a complete full-stack app—from database schema and OCR parsing to custom state management and predictive analytics—in less than a month as a solo developer was something I wasn't sure was achievable within the timeframe. Hitting this milestone early proved to me what's possible with disciplined execution and modern AI pairing.
What we learned
The biggest takeaway from W-Spread was mastering patience under intense pressure. Hackathons operate on aggressive timelines, forcing you to cut vanity features, identify high-impact deliverables, and maintain a sharp product focus.
I learned to put my ego aside, push beyond my comfort zone, and explore the outer limits of my potential in the digital space. It was a reminder that staying in your comfort zone is the enemy of growth.
What's next for W-Spread
If luck is on our side in this competition, my ultimate goal is for W-Spread to contribute to the digital transformation of accounting for Indonesian micro-enterprises. I want small business owners to manage their financial health effortlessly from the palm of their hand.
In 2 to 3 years, I hope to see thriving businesses that scaled successfully because W-Spread helped them stay solvent. I firmly believe that sustainable businesses aren't built on shiny branding alone—they survive on the entrepreneur’s discipline in managing their cash flow.
