From "Colour changes everything" to "Snapshot"

For our concept, we built upon the theme "Colour Changes Everything" to showcase the story of life through the lens of Elliot, a young boy with a passion for photography. Follow Elliot as he journeys through time with his cameras alongside him and chronicle the advancement of photography from black and white to Colour!

Inspiration

Our members wanted to create a fun and addictive game with a heartwarming storyline. We took inspiration from the nostalgic, black-and-white Chrome Dino Game, adding a splash of colour and personality!

Context

Elliot is an 8-year-old boy living in the beautiful town of Bath. On Christmas Day, he receives his first-ever camera from his beloved father. This starts his long-lived passion for photography. Join along as he documents the most precious moments of his life, a snap at a time.

How to play

The game is a side-scroller with the objective of avoiding the obstacles in the character's way.

Help Elliot take a memorable photo to add to his photo album! Level 1: Run outside into the snow and snap a photo with, your friend Billy, and his snowman. Watch out for the snow-covered boulders! Level 2: You are late for your date! Snap a photo of your wife at the drive-in cinema. Level 3: You're a grandpa! Snap a photo of the new bundle of joy.

How we built it

The video game was built using the game engine Godot and GDScript, and exported as a .apk file for Android mobile devices. Most of the artwork was hand-drawn by our brilliant designers using Sketchbook for iPad. The character sprites were generated using this helpful online tool (https://0x72.itch.io/pixeldudesmaker).

Challenges we ran into

Creating art for the game was particularly difficult as none of us had any experience drawing digitally. This led to us delaying creating the visual assets for the game for a long time. Ultimately, our passion for the game's powered us to push through and pump out all the artwork we needed right in time!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The concept!!! The story!!! The art!!! We believe our concept is extremely unique and is an interesting twist on the theme for the game jam. We are also proud of the final product - our game, and all that the team was able to learn in this short time frame.

What we learned

Developing a video game comes with its share of challenges. The team has learnt a lot during Snapshot's development (Don't stay up until 1 AM drawing art!). The importance of communication within the team and dedicating roles is one of these lessons. When we sat down together to work stuff out, everything really clicked.

What's next for Snapshot

Stay tuned for more levels, more lore and more memories! ✨
