Inspiration
The idea was inspired by my first ride on LimeBike. I already knew about UPC scanning for product reviews. So after using LimeBikes and seeing how fast they are able to scan and unlock, I was already looking for a way to promote using this idea for shopping from home.
What it does
SnapShop allows families to scan groceries onto shopping lists. From within their homes, they can already shop for goods through mobile apps. But SnapShop will allow them to quickly add items to their lists just by scanning the UPC.
How we built it
We built the app using angular 4 and ionic 3 for the front end to create a user-friendly native experience on Android. The backend was built using flask and flaskrestless to allow for UPC lookups sent from the client to a third party API. Once the client receives the UPC data, it then saves events locally, which are loaded into the calendar.
Challenges we ran into
Early on we struggled to build a team. Once we got a team together, we got straight to work. The Shop.com API was not able to query products by the API so we had to find ways around that as well. Lastly, we were challenged in finding ways to demonstrate the product in a video that was both informative and entertaining.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We put together a very diverse team of strangers from different backgrounds. In our team, we had only one business major, one coder, and one comm studies major. We had a lot of differences and opposing opinions, but we were able to work together, appreciate each others' strengths, trust each other, and have an exciting new experience working together.
What we learned
We learned more about Shop.com, their API, and the types of customers Shop.com will be vying for in the next 5-10 years. We also learned how to research consumer segments in the US and how to create promotional media.
What's next for SnapShop
Shop.com should build into SnapShop some consumer behavior analysis. This will allow Shop.com to predict customers purchases to save them time, as well as build repeat customers through autoshipping of regularly used products. Shop.com should also add recipe sharing functionalities within SnapShop so friends and families can share recipes, with the ability to add entire recipes to a cart with one click.
