Inspiration
’ve always lived at the intersection of two loves: cooking and social media. My "Saved" folder is a graveyard of delicious TikToks and Reels I swore I’d cook but never did. I was deeply inspired by the briefing from Eitan Bernath, who proved that you don't need a traditional path to be a force in the kitchen—you just need passion and a platform. Eitan’s "You can definitely do this!" energy hit home for me. I wanted to build a tool that gives everyone that same confidence. I had a dream to bridge the gap between digital inspiration and a real meal, but there was one problem: I had no clue how to code. This hackathon was my chance to stop dreaming and, as Eitan says, "just start."
What it does
SnapChef is the ultimate "bridge" for the modern home cook. You find a viral cooking video, paste the link, and SnapChef automagically extracts the ingredients. Not sure what you already have? Snap a photo of your fridge, and the app’s vision AI checks off what’s in stock. It compiles a "missing items" shopping list, suggests exotic extras (like "Mama’s Secret Spice"), and can even map your route to the store.
How I built it
I "vibed" this app into existence! Using Fastshot and Expo, I used natural language to describe my vision, and the tools translated my passion into React Native code. We integrated Computer Vision for the fridge-scanning and utilized RevenueCat to handle the "Pro" features. It’s a native Android experience built entirely through the power of AI-assisted development and a lot of heart.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest hurdle was my own "coding illiteracy." Understanding how native modules (like RevenueCat) interact with Expo Dev was a steep learning curve. I had to learn that "Development Builds" are the secret sauce for adding professional features. Mapping the logic of "subtracting" what’s in a fridge photo from a video's ingredient list took several iterations to get the "vibe" just right.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am incredibly proud that I went from zero lines of code to a working app that actually "sees" my food. Integrating a professional SDK like RevenueCat as a non-coder felt like a superpower. Proving that a passion for cooking and a good business idea can be realized through the right tools is my biggest win.
What I learned
Eitan Bernath often says that "information is power," and I learned that this applies to building apps too. I learned that "coding" is now as much about clear communication and vision as it is about syntax. I discovered how to use AI to solve complex architectural issues and realized that the "AI + Human Passion" combo is the fastest way to turn a "cook's dream" into a business reality.
What's next for SnapChef — Turn Viral Food Vids into Instant Shopping Lists
The vision is just beginning! I want to integrate direct checkout with supermarket delivery APIs so you can go from "TikTok" to "Doorstep" in three clicks. I also plan to refine the "Mama’s Spice" feature to allow users to share their own secret ingredient blends with a community of fellow SnapChefs, keeping that spirit of social culinary connection alive.
