Inspiration

We wanted to make wildlife more accessible and engaging by combining photography, AI, and mapping. Snap Species empowers users to explore biodiversity and contribute to citizen science.

What it does

Snap Species lets users take photos of animals, receive instant AI identification, and log sightings on a map. Users can explore, track, and share wildlife observations in real time.

How we built it

We made the frontend in Sveltekit and implemented a backend in FastAPI that identified species in photos and fetched relevant data.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was finding a way to accurately identify species in an image.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of combining AI identification, photo capture, and geolocation into a seamless application.

What we learned

We learned a lot about image processing and classification, using APIs, collaborating on GitHub, routing, and page styling.

What's next for Snap Species

Next would be to increase the accuracy of each species and making more information available to the user. Also introducing offline capabilities.
