Inspiration

What inspired me to make this project was the fact that my team and I all live in generally ingredient households, making it so that we all wanted to do something that worked around turning our existing ingredients into things that we can eat, especially making it so that we could take our ingredients and very easily work it into tasty food.

What it does

The app itself allows you to take an image of ingredients that exist in your household, and given those ingredients, can make you three recipes. These recipes range from difficulties of easy, medium, and hard, and also give rough calorie estimates for a normal sized portion of the meal.

How we built it

We built this app starting off with planning the design of the app in Figma, which is a tool that lets you see the designs of apps online. After this figma design was finalized, we applied this into the app using the react native framework and the expo app dev framework, both of which allowed us to develop a multiplatform ios and android app.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we ran into throughout making our project started with the learning of new tools. Not all our group members were familiar with tools such as Figma or React Native, and had to learn on the fly how to do new things and learn new frameworks along with learning how to use new API’s and AI tools to assist in making the project such that it could gather the specific ingredients.

Accomplishments

The accomplishments that we are proud of is the learning of new tools and adaptation of new tools in this project that we completed throughout our team. We had to go through the challenge of learning new API’s and how to implement them, using new software such as Figma, and applying all of this freshly learned knowledge into a project that we were able to quickly publish.

What we learned

Over the course of this project we learned a lot about app development and AI. We learned how to use react native and different AI models to generate recipes and detect hundreds of different foods. We also had to learn how to use different creative design apps such as canva and figma. Figma allowed us to create a model for how we want our app to look like but it was a completely new program we have never used. We watched several YouTube videos and experimented for hours to make certain designs work. We ended up learning how to create a base template for an iphone and android and created color schemes and graphics to add to these screens. In the end it looked good for what we had.

What’s next for snap n plate:

As for Snap N’ Plate, our group plans to continue working on this project outside of school as a passion project. We can see ourselves improving upon existing features and visuals such as our GUI and color scheme to make it appear more professional. We also plan to improve our ai model by feeding it more data so it is more accurate the more you use it. In the future we also plan to publish this in App Store and continue to update this app.
