Inspiration
We wanted a train game. We felt the market was lacking in games featuring trains, and we could fill that void. When you have Samuel Jackson on your team, it is pretty clear that we had to make an homage to one of Samuel Jackson's greatest works, Snakes on a Plane.
What it does
In this game, the player is in charge of placing randomly generated tracks for a 'train' to go down. The train accelerates as time passes encouraging players to play at faster paces and more prone to mistakes. The end goal of the game is to make it across the board to an end track which starts a new level starting at the users current speed.
How I built it
We built this using Unity using the C# scripting language.
Challenges I ran into
Our largest problem was time. Coming our group had limited knowledge of game development and Unity development, so mixing this into a shortly timeframed hackathon led to rushing through some of development process.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Overall we are most proud of what we learned. Beyond learning Unity development, we also had fun developing a sense of what makes a good game and keeping these ideas in mind when developing.
What's next for Snakes on a Train
There are multiple things we plan on continuing with in this project. We have an implementations to introduce multiple 'trains' as time passes as well as adding stations, where players can slow down trains but at the cost of increasing their size. Both of these are partially implemented, but could not make it into the prototype due to their additional mechanics. We also further intend to work on the animations and graphics to make the project as polished as possible.
