Inspiration
We wanted to create a debate experience that feels like survival, where words are weapons and recognizing manipulation is a matter of life or death. The mongoose versus snake dynamic creates natural tension between small but strategic versus large and deceptive.
What it does
Snakes and a Mongoose rd. 1 throws you into a gladiator arena as a mongoose facing the Two-Headed Dilemma Snake, a serpent opponent who weaponizes false binaries to justify snake domination. Using voice commands, you deploy Mongoose Moves like Dodge and Weave (redirect attacks) and Expose and Illuminate (reveal contradictions). The turn-based debate builds until you unlock a Strike Chance offering three possible finishing arguments. Only one is a true Critical Hit using good faith tactics. The others are tempting bad faith attacks that feel satisfying but lead to failure.
How we built it
Using ElevenLabs voice agents, we created a multi-voice agent/AI story engine that sets the tone and a Snake Host who narrates the arena spectacle. The voice interface lets players call out tactical moves naturally while the AI opponent adapts its manipulation strategies, building toward the critical decision moment.
Challenges we ran into
Making good faith communication feel as powerful as aggressive debate tactics. We needed players to experience that calm, strategic responses can be more devastating than personal attacks, which required the snake's defeat to feel earned through wisdom rather than volume.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a debate game where the most tempting responses lead to failure. The Strike Chance moment forces genuine decision-making about what kind of communicator you want to be when victory hangs in the balance.
What we learned
Debate scenarios resonate when they mirror real manipulation patterns. The Two-Headed Dilemma Snake's false binaries feel familiar because players encounter this tactic constantly, making the practice of countering it feel immediately applicable.
What's next for Snakes and a Mongoose rd. 1
Round 1 is the first of four debate duels. Players who win earn survival and advance to Round 2, facing new snake opponents representing different manipulation tactics in the ongoing tournament.
