Inspiration
I have been working as Atlassian administration for more than 10 years now and have done many migrations for data consolidation between multiple Jira instances. With each migration, there comes possible addition of duplicate fields. Jira can become slow with increased number of custom fields so it becomes critical to do cleanup post each migration. When Dev Unleashed was announced, I knew I need to try addressing this issue. But the twist was to add a fun factor to the app. I don't usually play mobile games but snake game has been my favorite in my childhood. Hence this idea came to my mind to add a twist to classic snake game and have snake food as duplicate custom fields in Jira.
What it does
Snake mania for Jira analyzes all custom fields in Jira and identify duplicates based on custom field names. Number of duplicate custom field becomes food which is available for a snake to eat. Game rules are very simple. In game area, snake will begin to search for its food as game begins. Number of food that has been plotted in game area is same as the number of duplicate custom fields in Jira. As snake eats food, it will grow. Snake can be moved within game area with the help of arrow keys on keyboard. Game will be over if snake accidentally hit wall of game area or snake collides with self or food of snake which means duplicate custom fields count in Jira gets over.
How we built it
We built this app in forge custom UI. We have retrieved custom fields data using Jira REST API invoked with the help of forge/bridge. Game code is simply react.
Challenges we ran into
Took lot of time to figure out a way to call REST API. There are different ways to call it from Jira UI toolkit and Custom UI.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Integrating Game with Jira was a task. We are proud that we did it.
What we learned
It was my first time to develop app for cloud Jira. So everything I learned about forge environment in this process was new to me.
What's next for Snake Mania for Jira
Right now custom field duplicates are found based on name duplicates. Would like to improve it based on natural language processing.
