Inspiration

This game was inspired by our team member, Harrison, who is always looking for free stuff at events, especially snacks. We thought it would be funny coding a game with him as the star of the show. We also wanted to be inclusive and have the eboard of WiCS to be in the game as well. The yellow hackathon t-shirts given out to everyone inspired the design of our main character sprite since it represented all the hackers in the room.

What it does

In Snack Stealer, a player plays as "Harrison" (who represents the hackers in the room) to steal snacks from HopperHacks. With the WASD keys or the arrow keys, a player can move Harrison around in the game environment. Avoiding the line of sight of the WiCS eboard, Harrison has to collect all the snacks in the game and bring them back to Hopper without getting caught to win.

How we built it

We built our game using Unity. The pixel art for the character sprites was made by our team member Joyce and pixel art for the background items were made by Harrison using Pixilart.

Challenges we ran into

We had challenges setting up the game environment as we were still very new to Unity, but after watching some tutorials we were able to overcome these challenges. Making sprites with pixel art was also extremely tedious, but we powered through.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to successfully create a working game. This was the first time our team has worked on a game project, and we're proud to be able to learn so much about Unity.

What we learned

We learned a lot about what it takes to make game, especially how much work goes into the graphics and animation of games. As our team was still new to coding as Mechanical Engineering majors, we learned how to use Unity through YouTube despite having no prior experience.

What's next for Snack Stealer

We aim to create new levels and harder obstacles for our game Snack Stealer. We also aim to create a character selection window to allow the player of all genders and ethnicities to feel represented.
