Inspiration
We noticed how hard it is to tell if products are truly sustainable. We wanted to make an app that helps everyone shop smarter and be kinder to the planet, just by checking a label!
What it does
"Snack Scan" is like a super-smart assistant for your groceries. You 'scan' a product label with your phone, and our app, powered by Google's Gemini AI, quickly tells you how sustainable it is and why. No more confusing labels, just clear info to help you make good choices.
How we built it
We used Python and Flask to make a simple web app. The cool part is connecting it to Google's Gemini AI, which does all the thinking about the label.
Challenges we ran into
Teaching the AI to read and understand all the different ways ingredients and eco-info are written on labels was tough! Labels can be really vague. Also, getting our app to talk perfectly with the AI was a bit of a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're really happy that our app can now actually connect with the Gemini AI and get responses. It's a huge step to see it working – scanning a label and getting sustainability info back.
What we learned
We learned a lot about hooking up a web app to a powerful AI. We got better at fixing problems with our API calls and keeping our important keys safe.
What's next for Snack scan
We want to have a more detailed analysis of ingredients, specifically allergens (looking at the potential for cross contamination in factories and sub allergens in larger ingredients). We also want to increase the data for the sustainability of products and companies (using things like ESG and EWG scores).
