Inspiration

This project was inspired by someone close to my heart—my nephew. Like many kids, he's curious, full of energy, and absolutely loves snacks. But as we started paying more attention to what was actually in those snacks, we found ourselves facing a lot of confusing ingredients—especially artificial dyes, sweeteners, and preservatives with names that sounded more like chemistry experiments than food.

What it does

Instead of turning snack time into a lecture or a source of tension, I wanted to create a tool that made it easy—and even fun—to understand what’s in our food. Something that could empower kids and adults alike to scan, learn, and decide together.

How we built it

Building the core logic was surprisingly smooth. With the help of OpenAI’s Custom GPTs, I was able to get a working version of the snack decoder running fairly quickly.

Challenges we ran into

But the real challenge came when I tried to prototype the experience visually: I struggled to find the right images that matched the tone—smart, playful, and health-conscious. Defining the page layout was tricky. I wanted it to feel intuitive, but also unique to the snack-scanning experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For the past two months, my nephew and I have been making more conscious snack choices—ranging from moderately healthy to truly nutritious options. We’ve turned grocery shopping into a collaborative, curiosity-driven process, not a conflict. The tool has sparked new conversations and learning moments that didn’t feel forced.

What we learned

It is absolutely possible to use simple tools to understand what’s healthy and what’s not—without turning it into a debate. With the right design and tone, even food labels can become a starting point for empowerment.

What's next for Snack Genius - decoder

the vision doesn’t stop here. The next step is to integrate Snack Genius into major shopping platforms, so users can: Scan or search snacks online, Instantly see health insights, And make informed choices—if they’re interested. No pressure, no preaching. Just better information at the right time. Snack Genius is growing into more than a tool—it's becoming a mindset.
