Inspiration

SmugShot was inspired by the emotional tension found in simple reflex games. The kind where one precise moment determines success or failure. We wanted to build something minimal yet emotionally impactful. The idea of turning a single tap into a moment of dominance or humiliation became the core concept.

What it does

SmugShot is a timing-based reflex game. Players must tap at the exact perfect moment to land a clean hit and wipe the smug grin off their opponent’s face. If they miss the timing window, the opponent reacts instantly by mocking or laughing at them.

The mechanic is simple, but the emotional feedback makes each round intense, competitive, and replayable.

How we built it

SmugShot was built using Defold game engine. The frontend handles the timing logic, visual feedback, and user interaction, while the backend manages initialization and Reddit integration.

We focused on: • Precise timing detection • Immediate visual and emotional feedback • Lightweight and responsive gameplay • Clean deployment across development and production subreddits

The game is structured to allow future expansion into daily challenges, stats tracking, and competitive progression.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was balancing the timing window to feel fair but still punishing. If the window is too wide, the game loses tension. If it’s too strict, it feels frustrating.

Another key challenge was designing emotional feedback that feels impactful without overcomplicating the mechanic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a simple mechanic that produces strong emotional reactions. The instant feedback loop of success vs. mockery which makes each round memorable.

We’re also proud of successfully deploying the game as a working Reddit-integrated app and establishing a clear development pipeline for future updates.

What we learned

We learned that simplicity can be powerful when paired with strong feedback. A single interaction, when designed correctly, can create tension, humor, and replayability.

We also gained deeper experience with: • Devvit app deployment • Managing separate development and production environments • Structuring a game for future scalability

What's next for SmugShot

SmugShot is currently in active development.

Upcoming features include: • Daily stats and performance metrics • Accuracy tracking and streak systems • Leaderboards for competitive play • Refinements to animation and reaction feedback • Expanded daily challenge modes

The goal is to evolve SmugShot into a daily competitive reflex challenge with measurable progression and community engagement.
