SMOP, the Super Mileage Optimizer, is a tool to assist the driver of any given on-road vehicle to safely operate the vehicle in the most efficient way possible. The app will have the following functions:

Vehicle Performance Characterizer

The Vehicle Performance Characterizer learns the performance characteristics of a vehicle as it is driven using open vehicle data so that optimized driving strategies can be calculated.

Velocity Profile Optimizer

In its simplest form the VPO uses the performance characterization, and driver velocity constraints, the velocity profile optimizer calculates an optimum “burn and coast” cruising strategy and prompts the driver how to follow it. The optimization in its most grandiose from would be a cloud computed monster-algorithm to optimize route, and transitions between cruising speeds for a trip.

Coast Computer

The coast computer can calculate how fast the vehicle will be going when it reaches a point on the road ahead if the vehicle is allowed to coast from its current speed and position. This information can help the driver plan for minimum braking KE-to-heat energy dissipation and maximum regenerative braking energy recovery during braking events.

Braking Event Energy Analyzer

The braking event energy analyzer informs the driver how much kinetic energy went where after a braking event.

Energy Info Display

The energy info display shows instantaneous energy data, like the thermal efficiency of the powertrain, energy dissipation rates, and allows the measure of average fuel economy over user defined intervals to evaluate driving strategies, and gain intuition about what works best.
