Inspiration
As a fitness enthusiast and busy professional, I struggled to find quick, balanced smoothie recipes that fit my goals—either high protein for post-workout or low-calorie for weight management. I wanted a tool that cut through trial-and-error, using only ingredients I had at home, so Smoothie Builder was born.
What it does
Smoothie Builder generates personalized smoothie recipes in 30 seconds—either by nutrition goal (High Protein/Low Calorie/Detox/Energy) or selected ingredients. It displays full nutrition facts, flavor profiles, and lets users save/favorite recipes for quick access.
How we built it
We started with wireframing core pages (Dashboard, Recipe Display, Saved Recipes) in Figma, then built the frontend with React/HTML/CSS. We coded recipe generation logic to prioritize goal-aligned ingredients and calculate nutrition values by summing ingredient contributions. LocalStorage handled saved/favorite recipes, with logic to avoid duplicates and auto-purge old non-favorite entries.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing flavor pairing rules (avoiding incompatible combinations like citrus + dairy) while keeping recipes nutritionally balanced. We also struggled with ensuring nutrition calculations were accurate and rounded for readability, and fixing mobile responsiveness for recipe cards.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a tool that generates recipes in under 2 seconds, meets all nutrition goal targets (e.g., 25g+ protein for High Protein recipes), and works entirely locally (no login needed). Users love the intuitive selection flow and clear nutrition breakdowns.
What we learned
I mastered frontend state management for dynamic ingredient selection, learned to translate nutrition science into actionable code logic, and improved UI/UX design for seamless mobile/desktop experiences. I also gained insight into balancing user experience with strict business rules (e.g., minimum 3 ingredients).
What's next for this project
Next, we’ll add allergen filtering (gluten/nut-free options), integrate a shopping list feature for missing ingredients, and explore cloud sync so users access recipes across devices. We also plan to expand flavor pairing logic with user feedback to refine add-in suggestions.
