Inspiration

According to research, 63% of men in Indonesia are smokers which is significantly more than the global average of 37%.

This project is dedicated to my late father who passed away at the age of 58 due to stroke. He was a heavy smoker and lived an unhealthy lifestyle, so I hope this would inspire people to be more health conscious and reduce or even quit smoking. The app is named after him, Koes, and is a play on words as it sounds like "smokers".

What it does

SMOKoes is an app for smokers that aims to help you stop smoking based on reverse psychology and accountability. You can use it to track every time you want to smoke which makes you more aware of your smoking habit.

You can see how many times you have wanted to smoke today and how many times you have actually smoked. You'll be prompted with fun facts that will make you think twice about smoking.

You will be asked if you'd still like to smoke or if you changed your mind. Earn points when you stop yourself from smoking and compare how you are doing with others on the leaderboard.

How we built it

Create React App with Materials-UI, deployed with GitHub Pages. Logo was made on Figma from scratch using vectors.

Challenges we ran into

Limited skillset as I'm a solo team and I couldn't set up a backend. Getting the time to build the full functionality of the app. I decided to focus on a smaller scope for the MVP and make it a static app. I also let go of automated testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working app that aligns with a cause that I personally care about. Worked out how to deploy it using GitHub pages.

What we learned

How to build a mobile-friendly app in one day! How to deploy to GH pages.

What's next for SMOKoes

Build the backend for the app so that users can create an account, log in, invite their friends and track their smoking habit together. Improve the leaderboard so the user can not only track their points socially but also against their own past and see how they're doing over time. Write automated tests.

Create widgets for the Apple Watch and Android Watch so it's even easier for people to use. No excuse not to log your smoking habit!

A potential long-term direction is to expand the scope beyond smoking to help people adopt a healthier lifestyle, for example reduce alcohol consumption, sugar consumption, etc.
