Inspiration

A lot of people have trouble visualising complex mathematical concepts. It can be easier to visualise a concept rather than looking at numbers on a paper. We wanted to create an app in VR using Unity to help teach math.

What it does

A specific problem we tackled was visualising what the determinant of a matrix actually is. The app, in its current state, puts you in a room and allows you to manipulate the vectors that make up a 3x3 matrix, and thus manipulating the vector space that is spanned by those vectors.

How we built it

We used HTC Vive VR equipment paired with Unity to develop the environment. The models and textures were created by us in blender.

Challenges we ran into

There were a lot of bugs that we ran into while writing the scripts and implementing them into Unity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to fix all of the bugs that we ran into. We also created a beautiful environment in which to learn what the determinant of a 3x3 matrix means.

What we learned

For the majority of us, this was the the first time we used Unity and C#, so we learned a lot about doing VR programming in Unity.

What's next for Smo0Th Brain Math

Hopefully, we will be able to continue developing our application for commission.
