Inspiration: The "Smiles for Miles" running club project was inspired by our shared desire to promote health, community, and positivity. We recognized the impact that physical activity can have on both mental and physical well-being and wanted to create a platform that encourages people to embrace an active lifestyle together. The name itself—“Smiles for Miles”—reflects the joy and fulfillment that come from running and being part of a supportive community.
What We Learned: Through this project, we gained a deeper understanding of web development, specifically in the areas of responsive design and user experience. We refined our skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, learning how to effectively structure and style a website to create a cohesive and engaging user interface. Additionally, we learned about logo design and how to integrate branding elements into a website to create a unified and appealing aesthetic.
How We Built the Project: The project was built using a combination of HTML for the structure, CSS for the styling, and JavaScript for interactive elements. We started by sketching a rough layout of the homepage, focusing on a simple yet effective design that would resonate with the club's mission. The header, featuring the club’s logo and an inviting call-to-action, was designed to be both visually appealing and functional.
We generated the logo with attention to representing the core values of the club—joy, community, and energy. We ensured the website's color scheme and typography were consistent with the brand, using specific color codes to maintain visual harmony. Throughout the process, we kept the user experience in mind, ensuring that the navigation was intuitive and the content was accessible.
Challenges Faced: One of the main challenges we faced was balancing the visual elements with the functionality of the website. Ensuring that the header looked dynamic while also being responsive across different devices required careful planning and iteration. Another challenge was creating a logo that encapsulated the spirit of the club while being versatile enough for use across various platforms and media.
We also encountered challenges in managing the overlay effects for images, particularly in making sure they looked clean and professional without overshadowing the text or other elements. Debugging issues with cross-browser compatibility and ensuring the site looked great on both desktop and mobile devices were also key challenges that required attention.
