Inspiration
Heart attacks are one of the major leading causes of death worldwide. Although medical technology has advanced significantly, even more so now with the use of AI, death rates remain relatively high, largely because many people who experience heart attacks may be alone and unable to call 911 in time. Because so many people have died due having no one to help them during a heart attack, we became determined to find a solution to the issue. Through that work, we developed an idea that not only helps people receive the attention they need during a heart attack but also aims to reduce the likelihood of heart attacks occurring in the first place.
What it does
Our way of reducing and alerting 911 of heart attacks is through a specially designed pillow. The way that it reduces heart disease is by maintaining a stable heart rate. What the pillow does is that it sends special frequencies of delta waves to your body, which helps lower your heart rate. By listening to these delta frequencies, your brain can reduce anxiety and help the body enter deep sleep. The pillow has a heart rate detector called a millimeter wave radar that emits electromagnetic waves which detects the heart rate of a person and returns it. If their heart rate is too high, it sends the delta frequencies to the body. When the millimeter wave radar returns heart rate signals that are very abnormal, it will alert 911 and call for an ambulance to help the person. In addition we also have an app that is included. The app tracks your Heart Rate Variability: which is the milliseconds per beat which then tells you other useful medical information like your stress and recovery levels. In addition, it also tracks breathing rates, measures skin temperature as well as warning for early fever, inflammation and recovery status using printed temperature sensors, and gives feedback every morning: such as good sleep quality, or worn out. It also warns of potential illnesses such as fevers.
How we built it
The main way we built our pillow is through using ballistocardiography. Ballistocardiography measures the mechanical movement in your body, ultimately also measuring the pulse of the heart. The science behind it is that every time your heart beats, it pumps a stroke of blood in your aorta. This causes a tiny microscopic recoil in your body measuring aspects such as your Heart-rate and Heart rate variability. Once we do that, if the heart rates that are returned are too high or low, a radio in the pillow will send delta signals to the body in order to bring the heart rates to a normal level. If the heart rates are too high or too low, it will send a 911 call to the nearest station in order to get someone to a hospital.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into was figuring a way to help against heart attacks, We knew we wanted to do something related to heart attacks, but we couldn't figure out. Then, we thought about hod hospitals treat heart attacks, then we realized that a big factor in surviving heart attacks was how fast you could get to the hospital. After some research, we realized
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to come together as a team and work through this difficult task. We faced many challenges but by being together, we were able to get through it. We are also proud that we were able to come up with a product that would have a very beneficial effect on society that was unique to us.
What we learned
We learned a lot about what makes a heart healthy as well as problems that the heart faces. Although we started this project out as an attempt to solve heart attack issues, we realized that heart disease was also a major issue for a ton of people. Then, we incorporate solving heart disease issues with our heart attack emergency system to get our final product.
What's next for Smheart Pillow
Our next goal with Smheart pillow is to make our product even higher quality. We plan to get better speakers, add more features to our apps, and improve the quality of our pillow. We also want to expand into different kinds of medical problems like cancer, and release our product world wide.
