Inspiration

Whenever we travel to a new location and wish to have a haircut, access tailoring services or simply want to eat, the challenge comes in trying to figure out the best among tens or hundreds of such services. It would usually involve a lot of "trial and error" which is economically exacting, at best.

This problem inspired the idea of Smartcityz!

What it does

Smartcityz is an online platform where service providers and their potential customers meet. Services providers showcase their services while the customers (service consumers) come around to look up good services.

Service consumers rate and submit review on any service they patronize. Subsequent consumers use such ratings to infer the quality of services of the providers in question.

For service providers, Smarcityz provides them with tips and recommendation on methods to improve the quality of their services.

How we built it

Smarcityz was conceived and developed by a team consisting of back end, front end and UI/UX developers.

For the back end, the following were employed:

• Django
• Python
• Postgresql

For the front end, the following were used:

• JQuery
• Bootstrap
• HTML
• CSS
  

Challenges we encountered

• Trying to get an API for user's location detection via the I.P. address with reliable results. Different free APIs were adopted but the locations generated were not consistent.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The team is quite proud of is its capacity to actualize an idea that initially seemed almost impossible for the accomplishment of a set of junior developers.

The prospect of how businesses in Africa and beyond stand to benefit from our innovation is yet another plus to be excited about.

What we learned

The team learned a great deal on the methods and tools used for collaboration between disparate developers necessary to build solutions, even as it was engaged in building an enterprise application.

Prior to this project, most of the members had little to zero experience integrating location and map into applications.

What's next for Smartcityz

Although we are still making modifications on the projects, we are aiming at:

• acquiring an office space
• properly hosting our web app
• organizing seminars and throwing radio adverts as means of awareness for Smartcityz
• launching fully our company and generating remarkable profit
