Inspiration

The inspiration for Smartudy came from the recognition of diverse learning styles among students. We realized that traditional educational resources often fail to cater to these differences, and we wanted to create a solution that would accommodate individual learning preferences and needs. The fact that 89% of teachers believe in matching instruction to a student’s preferred learning style further motivated us to develop Smartudy.

What it does

Smartudy is a learning platform that leverages artificial intelligence to streamline the development of study materials.

How we built it

Smartudy was built as a web development project using Django, Azure and its AI tools. We utilized Azure Cognitive Services to extract succinct text summaries from various text sources or files, enhancing the accessibility and comprehensibility of the content. We also incorporated audio generation capabilities into the platform to cater to auditory learners.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of the text extraction and summary generation processes. It was crucial for us to develop a system that could reliably convert manual notes or files into text and generate meaningful summaries from them. Additionally, creating an intuitive and user-friendly interface for the platform was another challenge we had to overcome. We wanted to make sure that students could easily navigate through the platform and make the most out of its features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Smartudy accommodates individual learning preferences and needs, thereby enriching the learning experience. It’s a great tool for students who want to study more efficiently and effectively based on the following objectives:

  1. Text Summaries: This feature allows students to quickly grasp the main points of a text without having to read through the entire document.

  2. Audio Generation: This means that students can listen to the summaries in addition to reading them, which is particularly beneficial for auditory learners.

  3. File Conversion: This means that even if a student has handwritten notes, they can be converted into digital text and summarized.

  4. User-Friendly Interface: The platform has been designed to be intuitive and easy to navigate. Students can easily generate new summaries from text or files, view saved summaries, and even listen to audio versions of the summaries.

What we learned

Throughout the development of Smartudy, we learned about the power and potential of Azure AI and its Cognitive Services. We discovered how to leverage Vision, Language, and Speech capabilities to convert manual notes or files from students into text, create text summaries, and convert text into audio. This project also taught us about the importance of inclusivity in education and how technology can be used to promote it.

What's next for Smartudy

Adding language learning features and a log in system for users and administrators.
