When brainstorming ideas for sustainability, our group realized that a significant portion of waste comes from small inefficiencies in mass industrial processes. One example of this in our everyday lives is paper price tags, and after researching existing solutions, we were surprised to find that there wasn’t a cost-efficient and user-accessible alternative. Our product, Smart Tag, consists of both software and hardware components. It includes a dashboard that allows users to manually edit prices in their inventory, with these changes synced to the hardware in real time. Users can also expand their inventory through bulk uploads and apply discount rates to existing products. We used React for the front end and ThinkSpeak for backend connection to the hardware. For the hardware, we used an LCD screen and a Raspberry Pi. We encountered challenges integrating the front end, back end, and external hardware, but we are proud to have created a product with the essential functionality of real-time data synchronization, including the ability to apply discounts. In the future, we plan to implement predictive AI to automatically adjust for inflation.
