Inspiration The inspiration for SmartSummarize was the challenge of keeping up with large amounts of technical content, articles, and documentation during coding competitions and hackathons. Often, the task of extracting important information from lengthy text was time-consuming, distracting from the core problem-solving process. This motivated the idea to build an AI-powered summarization tool that helps users quickly digest key points, improve information retention, and boost productivity.

What i Learned Gained hands-on experience building Chrome web tools and integrating AI APIs for text summarization.

Learned how to manage API authentication securely within Chrome Extensions and handle user sessions efficiently.

Deepened understanding of user interface design that suits both novice and advanced users with features like dark mode, history tracking, and export options.

Implementation Frontend: Built with standard web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), optimized for Chrome browser compatibility.

Chrome AI Integration: Integrated with Chrome’s built-in Summarizer API to process and summarize user-provided or uploaded text in real-time.

Features:

Dark mode for comfortable reading

History tracking so users can revisit recent summaries

Export options (text, CSV, PDF)

Open Source: Codebase published at GitHub under the MIT license for transparency and collaboration.

Challenges Ensuring fast and reliable summary generation for files of varying sizes and formats.

Debugging issues with API key integration and managing requests within Chrome extension permissions.

Designing a UI that accommodates history and export features without overwhelming new users.

Handling API errors and providing meaningful feedback to the user.
