Inspiration
As college students, we have to digest an ever-increasing amount of text as the semester progresses. We were looking for a way to ease this burden, and realized we could make an app that was able to abridge the texts while keeping the most important pieces of information. We soon realized that applications extended far beyond just education.
What it does
SmartScanner is an intelligent document scanner that can take a picture of text, interpret it, and return a succinct version of it. This text can then be translated and/or shared with coworkers, classmates, or professionals who have to look through large amounts of information with limited time.
How we built it
We used Cordova, Framework7, and several cordova plugins for interacting with the native OS. The app is coded in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We used Optical Character Recognition in order to extract the text from the photos, where we then used Natural Language Processing and AI to summarize and highlight important parts of the text.
Challenges we ran into
Lack of internet Lack of internet Lack of internet This was our first time working with several new frameworks and libraries, and we encountered several conflicts that we have to find ways around.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working prototype of the app. It can take a picture of text, summarize it, where it can then be translated or shared.
What we learned
A lot about OCR, NLP, JavaScript and Web Dev.
