Inspiration♻️ SmartSort – Project Story

💡 Inspiration

Improper waste disposal is a major contributor to pollution and inefficient recycling systems. Many people genuinely want to recycle correctly but are often confused about how to sort different types of waste—especially when materials look similar or fall into multiple categories. This gap between intention and action inspired us to build SmartSort, a simple tool to guide users toward better waste management habits.

🚀 What it does

SmartSort is an intelligent waste-sorting assistant that helps users identify how to dispose of everyday items correctly. By entering or selecting an item, users receive clear guidance on whether it belongs in recycling, compost, or landfill. The tool simplifies decision-making and promotes responsible waste disposal.

🛠️ How we built it

We developed SmartSort as a lightweight and accessible prototype:

Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript Core Logic: Rule-based classification of common waste items User Interface: Simple input system for quick and easy use Data Handling: Predefined categories for recyclable, compostable, and non-recyclable items

The focus was on building a functional and user-friendly prototype that demonstrates the concept effectively.

📚 What we learned

Through this project, we learned:

How to translate an environmental problem into a practical digital solution The importance of user-friendly design in behavior-change tools Basics of structuring and organizing data for real-world applications How simple technology can create meaningful environmental impact ⚠️ Challenges we ran into Categorizing waste accurately due to variations in local recycling rules Keeping the interface simple while providing useful information Deciding how detailed the guidance should be without overwhelming users Working within time constraints to deliver a complete prototype 🌍 Impact

SmartSort encourages better waste segregation at the individual level, which can significantly improve recycling efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. By making waste sorting simple and accessible, it helps bridge the gap between awareness and action.

🔮 What’s next

We see strong potential to expand SmartSort further:

Add image recognition to identify waste items using a camera Customize recommendations based on user location Include educational tips and sustainability insights Develop a mobile app for real-time usage
