The idea behind SmartShop Buddy
Have you ever come back from shopping and realized you forgot the one thing you actually went there for?
Or bought something, only to find out that you already had it sitting in your kitchen?
These little moments seem harmless, but they can lead to repeated trips, unnecessary spending, extra packaging, food waste, and a lot of frustration.
That made me think: what if shopping could be a little smarter before we even leave home?
That question became SmartShop Buddy.
More than just a shopping list
I didn't want to build another app where you simply type “milk” and “bread” into a checklist.
I wanted SmartShop Buddy to understand what is already at home and help make better decisions before and during a shopping trip.
The first step is setting up My Kitchen. Users add the items they already have, including their quantities. When they create a shopping list, SmartShop Buddy compares it with their kitchen inventory.
For example, if you already have 1 packet of milk but need 3, the app doesn't simply say “Milk is already at home.” It understands that you still need 2 more packets.
That small detail was important to me because I wanted the app to feel genuinely useful, not just digital.
Making shopping better for the whole family
I also thought about something that happens in many families: shopping with children.
Children naturally see things they want while shopping, and parents can end up hearing “Can I get this?” again and again.
Instead of completely removing that part of the experience, I created Kids' Choice Tokens.
The physical kit comes with three tokens. Each child can use a token to make an optional choice during the shopping trip. Once the tokens are used, that's it for that trip.
It turns an everyday situation into a simple system that gives children a voice while keeping shopping more organized.
The physical kit also includes a foldable reusable cloth bag and food organizer labels, connecting the digital experience to real-life habits.
How I built it
The concept, user flow, feature ideas, and logic behind SmartShop Buddy came from me. I used Google AI Studio as an AI-assisted development tool to turn those ideas into a working full-stack application.
I didn't want to just give AI one prompt and accept whatever it created.
I built the project step by step — explaining how each feature should work, testing it, finding things that didn't behave the way I wanted, and giving more detailed instructions to improve them.
I kept asking questions like:
What happens if the user already has some of an item?
What happens after they finish shopping?
What happens if they forget something while they're at the store?
Will the kitchen quantity actually update correctly?
Thinking through these situations helped me turn a simple idea into a complete shopping journey.
The challenges
One of the hardest parts was making all the features work together.
The kitchen inventory affects the shopping list. The shopping list connects to Shopping Mode. Shopping Mode affects the kitchen after a trip. The Kids' Choice Tokens need to reset for a new trip without losing previous history.
Getting these connections and quantities right required a lot of testing and refining.
Another challenge was keeping the app useful without making it complicated. I wanted something a family could understand quickly, rather than another app that feels like work to use.
What I learned
This project taught me that building a product isn't just about technology.
It starts with noticing a problem.
Then comes the difficult part: asking “What would actually make this better?”
I also learned how powerful AI-assisted development can be when the person using it has a clear idea and is willing to keep testing, questioning, and improving the result.
SmartShop Buddy started with a simple thought about forgotten groceries. It grew into a product that connects planning, family choices, reusable habits, and smarter shopping in one experience.
And that's what I love most about the project:
It isn't trying to make people shop more. It's trying to help them shop with more thought.
