Crime Analysis in Sacramento

Inspiration

We are students of sac State living in Sacramento for more than a year now and in this duration we have seen few issues the society is facing today like using the public transportation services, increasing crime rate and the increasing homeless population. All these problems have been addressed in their own ways. With the advancement in technology everyone like to have a single gateway and with an easy application, many people can work on the issues and can solve it better.

What it does

We took the opportunity to address such multiple issues in a single application. The application shows a dashboard that gives insight about region-wise crimes, the timeline of the crimes a simple analysis for the user to understand their surroundings. The application also can predict the next time the crime is expected to occur. The users have the option to report a recent crime that has occurred through the report section. Once a new crime is reported all the registered users are sent a message about it.

The food section helps to donate the excess food we have at home by simply selecting the type of food and the nearby pickup service to collect the food for donation. This feature also helps you can track the status of the food donated and receive messages on their mobile.

The application also has services to give the latest news updates and help with public transportation by giving different routes and timings as queried

How we built it

The application was built mainly by using Vuejs for the front end python for the backend. several other services like tableau for dashboards, Twilio for message alerts, google cloud Firestore services for application hosting, authentication, storage and cloud services. Jupyter Notebook was used for preprocessing and generating models. We also used the IBM-Z server Jupyter Notebook for training but due to IBM-Z server errors, we moved to the local Jupyter Notebook.

Challenges we ran into

The major challenges faced was developing the analytics on the crime data as there were very fewer data and to gain insights to represent in a format readable to the public.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Would right soon One thing that we are most proud of is that we were able to address the major issues and provide a solution in a single application and making the users also a part of the solution for a better society.

What's next for SmartSac

To come up with good predictions to alert people before the crime has occurred and increased the services to overcome other issues like housing etc. Moreover, we are planning to add a feature for Foodbanks to register with our app and get notified whenever someone submits the donation order.
