Smartr

Smartr is an ecosystem of mobile, web, and soon smartwatch and CarPlay platforms that vertically integrates studying into every environment of student life.

Inspiration / Problem

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to studying but most students are forced to piece together their learning experience from multiple subscriptions like NotebookLM, Quizlet and ChatGPT and other disconnected more general apps. Notes apps are designed for general note-taking, study apps are often limited to quizzes, and most tools are not built specifically for school or deep understanding simply "prep before the big exam".

This fragmentation makes it difficult for students to fully engage with material, adapt to different learning styles, or keep everything in one central hub. Additionally, many existing tools focus on long-form content, while students today are far more accustomed to short-form, interactive experiences where they dont just see numbers and letters, they need to be able to touch and "feel" them.

So... we are building Smartr.

What It Does

Smartr provides students with every type of studying method in one place, fully tailored to their specific class or material. It is vertically integrated, meaning it can take students from note taking via live transcription, to teaching via flash cards and short form explainer videos (not just static images with a voice over but actual animations and deep dives) , to testing with quizes, and finally to directly interacting with the content itself via interactive pages. Our new interactive pages use gemini models as building blocks to translate letter, number and formulas into interactive, intuition building html pages.

The platform adapts to personal preferences, works across different environments (mobile, web, and more), and emphasizes interactive, hands-on learning that has been shown to be more effective than passive study methods.

What Makes It Unique

Instead of passively reading or watching content, Smartr lets students interact with what they are learning. Whether it’s basic science or advanced calculus, students can visualize each step, manipulate graphs, change variables, and experiment in real time with unlimited subjects and lessons by leveraging gemini's coding capabilities

It’s like a textbook that has come to life, one you can twist, explore, and interact with until the concept truly clicks.

How It Works

  • Smartr is powered by a collection of edge functions connected to a backend that generates study tools such as podcasts, quizzes, flashcards, and interactive pages.
  • Interactive lessons are built through a Gemini-powered orchestration loop that creates a lesson plan for a given topic or question(s).
  • Each step of the lesson is turned into an interactive HTML module that students can actively engage with.
  • A secondary loop allows Gemini to control the browser, test each module for functionality and aesthetics, and automatically fix issues until the lesson is accurate and complete.
  • All modules are then dynamically assembled into a single interactive HTML learning experience.

What We Built

For the hackathon, we built an MVP of the Smartr platform across iOS, Android, and the web. All platforms are synchronized and allow users to generate lessons and experiment with different study tools in a development environment.

Tech Stack

  • JavaScript / TypeScript
  • Python
  • HTML / CSS
  • Edge Functions
  • Docker
  • Shell scripting
  • Gemini API

Challenges We Faced

The biggest challenge was keeping costs low enough for scalability while still delivering high-quality, interactive HTML lessons. An early approach involved a fully cloud-controlled, AI-driven workspace, but this quickly proved too expensive.

We pivoted to a modular generation system where each lesson component is generated, tested, and refined independently. This approach significantly reduced costs while improving quality and reliability.

What We Learned

Through building Smartr, we learned how students are currently learning and how to translate those behaviors into software. On the technical side, we gained experience breaking large AI-driven tasks into smaller, modular steps that reduce cost without sacrificing quality.

What’s Next

After the hackathon, we plan to polish the app and website and move out of development mode. Next, we aim to expand Smartr to additional platforms such as Apple Watch & other smartwatches, and Apple CarPlay.

Long-term, we envision integrating Smartr into augmented reality platforms like Apple Vision, allowing students to literally step into their lessons.

Some day in the future also a possiblity of working with teachers/educators, using the same "user facing on-shot code generation" technology to provide each student with lessons based on their strengths, weaknesses and interests.

Our ultimate goal is to make Smartr a complete, unified hub for education and studying across all environments and someday becoming the industry standard for students and their education.
