💡 Inspiration
Modern financial tracking apps often lack intelligent, real-time guidance, while AI tools are rarely integrated directly with actual payment workflows. We wanted to bridge this gap by combining seamless digital payments with advanced financial intelligence.
🚀 What it does
SmartPay AI is a fintech web application that allows users to perform secure transactions using the PayPal Sandbox environment while leveraging Google Gemini AI to analyze spending behavior and generate instant, personalized financial insights.
🛠️ How we built it
- Frontend: React, Vite, and CSS for a responsive, clean dashboard experience.
- Backend: Node.js and Express.js to handle API requests and business logic.
- Database: MongoDB (Mongoose) for secure transaction records and data persistence.
- AI & Payments: Integrated Google Gemini AI (
@google/genai) for smart insights and PayPal Sandbox API for secure money transfers.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
Ensuring secure handling of private API credentials and setting up the PayPal Sandbox environment alongside real-time AI prompt responses required careful configuration, which we successfully solved using environment variables and structured error handling.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an end-to-end working fintech prototype that combines live sandbox payments with AI-driven budgeting recommendations.
📚 What we learned
Deepened our understanding of integrating financial gateways (PayPal) and generative AI engines into a cohesive MERN stack architecture.
