I built SmartPay AI to explore how Artificial Intelligence can make payment management smarter and help users better understand their transaction activity.
Payment platforms generate valuable transaction data, but understanding payment statuses, identifying potential risks, and getting useful insights can be challenging. I wanted to bring AI-powered insights and payment functionality together in one simple platform.
🚀 What it does
SmartPay AI is an AI-powered payment management platform featuring:
- AI Transaction Risk Analysis: Analyzes transaction information and provides risk estimates and recommendations.
- AI Assistant: Uses Google Gemini to answer questions and summarize transaction activity.
- PayPal Integration: Demonstrates payment creation and capture through PayPal Sandbox.
- Transaction Monitoring: Displays completed, pending, and failed transactions.
- Analytics Dashboard: Helps users explore transaction summaries and payment insights.
🛠️ How I built it
I developed SmartPay AI using Next.js 16, React 19, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS.
For AI capabilities, I integrated Google Gemini 2.5 Flash using the Google GenAI SDK. The assistant can respond to prompts such as "Summarize my transactions" and "How can I spot risky payments?"
For payment functionality, I integrated the PayPal JavaScript SDK and PayPal Orders API to demonstrate order creation and payment capture using Sandbox accounts.
I deployed the application on Vercel and made the source code publicly available on GitHub.
🧠 Challenges I faced
One of the biggest challenges was integrating PayPal Sandbox payments with the application and ensuring that the order creation and capture flow worked correctly.
I also worked through AI integration issues, API configuration, deployment challenges, and connecting the different parts of the application into one working experience.
Testing the complete payment flow and making the AI assistant provide useful transaction insights helped me improve the project.
📚 What I learned
Building SmartPay AI helped me gain practical experience with:
- Integrating AI models into a full-stack application.
- Working with Google Gemini and the Google GenAI SDK.
- Implementing PayPal Sandbox payment workflows.
- Building API routes with Next.js.
- Debugging, testing, and deploying a real-world style application.
- Combining AI capabilities with payment-related workflows.
🔮 What's next
I would like to improve SmartPay AI with more advanced transaction intelligence, better risk detection, enhanced analytics, and additional payment management capabilities.
