Inspiration:

In today's world, we often overlook the value of our food, leading to unnecessary waste and unhealthy eating habits. SmartPantry addresses these issues head-on, offering a solution that encourages mindful consumption and healthier meal choices at the same time provides global food waste solution.

What it does

SmartPantry empowers users to discover and save nutritious recipes, manage leftovers efficiently, and learn effective food storage techniques. The platform simplifies tracking leftover meals, including details like preparation dates and consumption status, alongside providing crucial food storage advice to extend the life of ingredients and meals.

How we built it

Crafted with the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js), SmartPantry leverages MongoDB for data storage, including user profiles, saved recipes, and leftover tracking. The seamless integration of frontend and backend technologies ensures a dynamic and user-friendly experience, while the Edamam API enriches the recipe database with diverse, healthy options.

Challenges we ran into

We navigated through several challenges like establishing database connectivity and ensuring smooth interaction between the frontend and backend. Utilizing tools like Postman for backend testing and refining data retrieval and formatting methods were key strategies that propelled our progress. We also had issues with API communication which we solved with thorough debugging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in SmartPantry's comprehensive functionality, from saving recipes to managing leftovers, which marks a significant achievement in usability and design. The learning journey, from mastering React to integrating the MERN stack, has been profoundly rewarding, mirroring the satisfaction of engineering a fully operational creation.

What we learned

This project has been a rich source of knowledge, offering insights into API communication, frontend-backend integration, and the cross connections of using React within the MERN framework. The hands-on experience has significantly enhanced our understanding of web development.

Back-End Development: Led the development of SmartPantry's back-end with Node.js and Express.js, creating crucial components like app.js, userControllers.js, recipeController.js, and establishing API routes for seamless application functionality.

I worked on figuring out how we can use the fetch requests between our front and backend. I also worked on the initial app setup and a lot of the page styling.

I worked on the front end and back end for this project. Started with front end first day and a half, and did back end for the remainder. Did a pretty equal amount of work on both. Took a lot of time. Felt good at the end. It was a fun experience.
