Inspiration
Students and professionals waste time manually summarizing lengthy learning material. We wanted to build a tool that saves time while ensuring nothing important is missed.
What it does
SmartNotes AI allows users to upload PDFs, documents, or even YouTube video links. It uses Gemini’s multimodal understanding to extract core topics, highlight keywords, and generate short, clear notes that are easy to revise.
How we built it
We built the frontend in React, with a backend using Python (Flask). The Gemini API handles summarization, semantic segmentation, and note structuring. A MongoDB database stores user files and summaries.
Challenges we ran into
Handling large text input efficiently without losing context.
Ensuring the notes stay accurate and non-repetitive.
Designing prompts that preserve definitions and examples.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created an end-to-end pipeline that can summarize a 30-page document into a 1-page summary within 15 seconds.
What we learned
We explored prompt optimization, text chunking, and learned how Gemini handles multimodal data.
What's next for SmartNotes AI
Voice-based input, flashcard generation, and integration with Google Classroom.
