The inspiration behind SmartGluco comes from my friend Pedro (CoFounder), who has lived with diabetes since he was 15 years old. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand the daily struggle he faces just to manage something as basic as eating a meal.
Every time Pedro sits down to eat, he doesn’t really know how much his blood sugar will rise. The methods available today carb counting and insulin factors are imprecise, generic, and often disconnected from the reality of his own body. What usually happens is that he has to guess, sometimes based on how he feels, sometimes on the last glucose reading, or sometimes just on what he ate before. And too often, those guesses are wrong.
The result? Uncertainty, mistakes in insulin administration, and higher risks of hypo- or hyperglycemia. Sadly, this isn’t just Pedro’s story:
80% of patients miscalculate carbohydrates.
40% of insulin doses include an extra “estimated” amount that isn’t accurate.
Seeing this made me realize that there was no truly practical and personalized tool to help people like Pedro. That’s where SmartGluco comes in.
We built SmartGluco to go beyond logging numbers. The app not only integrates glucose, insulin, and meals—it also uses AI to calculate carbs and predict how blood sugar will behave after each meal, based on the patient’s own history and daily context. For the first time, people with diabetes can stop guessing and start making decisions with confidence.
What We Learned
Working on this project taught us that:
Personalization is everything. No two patients respond the same way.
Simplicity drives adherence. If the app feels heavy or complicated, people stop using it.
Listening directly to patients like Pedro is the best way to design something that really helps.
Challenges
The journey wasn’t easy. We faced challenges like:
Handling the variability and noise in real patient data.
Integrating smoothly with existing tools like LibreLink.
Striking the right balance between medical accuracy and a friendly, approachable user experience.
But these challenges are exactly what make SmartGluco valuable: it was born from real struggles, and built with the goal of making life simpler, safer, and more predictable for people living with diabetes every day.
