Inspiration
In Uzbekistan, over 40% of irrigation water is wasted due to inefficient usage, and improper soil moisture levels reduce crop yields by 20%[cite: 1]. We were inspired to create a solution that helps local farmers optimize water and electricity consumption using modern technology[cite: 1].
What it does
SmartFarm is an IoT ecosystem that measures soil moisture and temperature every 15 minutes and transmits data up to 10 km via LoRaWAN[cite: 1]. It delivers clear, actionable "Irrigation Time" notifications directly to the farmer's mobile app in Uzbek[cite: 1].
How we built it
Currently, we have developed a functional mobile application prototype for SmartFarm[cite: 1]. The app is designed to connect with energy-efficient IoT sensors via a LoRaWAN base station once hardware integration is completed[cite: 1].
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenge was ensuring reliable sensor operation in harsh weather conditions (achieving IP67 durability) and optimizing long-range wireless data transmission across rural agricultural fields[cite: 1].
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully designed a solution that reduces water consumption by 35%, electricity costs by 30%, increases yields by 25%, and pays for itself within a single season[cite: 1].
What we learned
We gained valuable experience in hardware engineering, LoRaWAN wireless network deployment, mobile app development, and integrating agronomic data into automated systems[cite: 1].
What's next for SmartFarm
We plan to conduct MVP testing with 15 farmers by May 2026, begin mass production, deploy over 500 units across Uzbekistan by 2027, and expand to the Central Asian market by 2028[cite: 1].
