Inspiration

Education in Timor-Leste still faces challenges in accessibility and inclusivity. Many students and community members lack a centralized platform for structured learning. SmartEdu Timor-Leste was inspired by the need to empower local communities with digital tools that make learning engaging, multilingual, and collaborative.

What it does

SmartEdu Timor-Leste is a modern Learning Management System (LMS) that provides:

  • Interactive courses with video lessons and downloadable materials
  • Auto-generated quizzes with instant scoring and confetti animation
  • Community forums for collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Multilingual support (Tetum, Bahasa Indonesia, English, Portuguese)
  • An Admin Dashboard for managing courses, quizzes, users, and analytics

How we built it

We built SmartEdu Timor-Leste using MeDo as the app generator, with Supabase for authentication and database management. The frontend uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and Vite for responsive design and fast development. Dicebear API was integrated for avatars, and i18n JSON files were used to implement multilingual support. The design follows Timor-Leste’s national identity colors (red, yellow, black, white) with animations and ripple effects for modern UI.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a clean, responsive UI that reflects national identity while remaining modern
  • Implementing multilingual support across all pages and ensuring translations were consistent
  • Structuring the Admin Dashboard to handle CRUD operations for courses, lessons, quizzes, and users
  • Balancing simplicity for students with advanced features for administrators

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully created a full LMS prototype with authentication, dashboard, courses, quizzes, and forums
  • Built an Admin Dashboard with analytics and management tools
  • Integrated multilingual support for four languages
  • Applied responsive design principles and animations to enhance user experience

What we learned

We learned how to leverage MeDo for rapid app generation, integrate Supabase for backend services, and apply Tailwind CSS for responsive UI. We also gained experience in designing multilingual applications and structuring admin features for scalability. Most importantly, we learned the importance of aligning technology with community needs.

What's next for SmartEdu Timor-Leste

  • Expand course content and add certification features
  • Introduce gamification elements such as leaderboards and achievement badges
  • Enhance analytics with deeper insights into student performance
  • Explore integration with external learning platforms
  • Develop mobile-native applications for iOS and Android
