Who we are

We are SmartEdu, a team from Vietnam with a passionate vision to revolutionize education. Our goal is to make learning more accessible, efficient, and tailored to individual needs, especially for those struggling to find suitable educational content.

What we chose

UN 17 goals - Target 4.4: By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship

Inspiration

In today’s world where technology has significantly developed, many people prefer learning online, like the Americans. However, it’s a saddening fact that not everyone has the opportunity to experience learning through technology. According to UNICEF, around 460 million students worldwide can’t access remote learning programs simply because they lack the necessary devices or infrastructure. "Globally, at least 31% of students from pre-primary to upper secondary schools cannot be reached due to either a lack of policies supporting digital and broadcast remote learning or a lack of the household assets needed to receive digital or broadcast instruction", the report says, with Africa and South Asia the least prepared for prolonged school closures.

The youngest students are most likely to be cut off from remote learning opportunities, as two out of three pre-primary students cannot be reached. In purely numerical terms, the problem is most pronounced at the primary school level, where more than 200 million students lack access to remote learning tools.

The main challenge comes from lack of internet search skills, 90.7%, followed by the confusion caused by excessive information on the internet, 82.6%. Lastly, 61.6% is from poor internet connectivity. The first two are discussed in relation to this study. For instance, in all three group discussions, it is highlighted that students face difficulties in searching and evaluating information. From these findings, we conclude that students are overwhelmed by the vast amount of information on the internet. In the present era, remote learning is an undeniable trend. 70% of students agree that online learning is better than traditional classrooms. The global online education market is expected to reach $457.8 billion by 2026. (https://upskillwise.com/online-learning-statistics/)

Especially, YouTube - a powerful platform with over 1 billion monthly active users and about 300 hours of video uploaded every minute - plays a crucial role in promoting online learning. In the second quarter of 2023, 26.4% of how-to videos and 26% of educational videos are the most liked. Generation Z mostly uses YouTube to assist learning. With YouTube being free, finding effective educational content on this platform becomes both a challenge and an opportunity. How can you make the most out of YouTube to enhance your knowledge? That's the question SmartEdu aims to help you answer.

SmartEdu is a smart learning application with many features, supporting users in easily searching, identifying, and accessing educational content efficiently. Here are some key features:

Summarize Learning Content: SmartEdu automatically collects learning materials from reliable sources and organizes them by curriculum. Users can learn anytime, anywhere, on any device.
Content Organization by Learning Path: The app helps users identify a suitable learning path based on their personal goals, organizing content logically and systematically from basic to advanced.
User Ratings and Recommendations: Users can rate content, creating a reliable database for suggesting high-quality and relevant learning materials.
Support Content Creators: SmartEdu respects content creators by providing a supportive environment that encourages creativity and knowledge sharing.
AI-Powered Search and Learning Assistance: With advanced AI technology, SmartEdu offers quick and intelligent search assistance, suggesting learning content tailored to each user's specific needs. Smart searching using natural language processing (NLP) technology allows users to describe their learning preferences instead of relying on traditional keywords. Virtual assistants and chatbots using NLP provide support for students on their learning journey.
Level Selection and Interest-Based Content Board: Users can choose their learning level and select topics of interest, personalizing their learning experience. With SmartEdu, we are committed to providing a comprehensive, flexible, and reliable learning platform to help everyone effectively gain knowledge.

How we built it

The journey of building SmartEdu has been an exciting journey full of creativity and hard work. Starting from detailed research and analysis, we set a clear goal: to create the smartest, most engaging, and flexible learning platform possible. Always focused on meeting user needs, we begin with in-depth research into the online learning market. At each step, besides important features, we also thought about optimizing user experience. The look and feel of the app were designed to be not just easy to use but also enjoyable. Through each design phase, we concentrated on creating a smooth interface, from content search to interaction with learning features. We also used smart technology like AI and NLP to personalize the experience for each user. We don’t stop improving. We listen to what users have to say and make the app better based on their feedback. Now, SmartEdu is more than just an app—it's the result of a great adventure where our team worked hard to make learning easy and enjoyable for everyone.

Challenges we ran into

When developing SmartEdu, there are certainly some challenges:

Bringing ideas to life: The first challenge is turning ideas into reality. Figuring out what to do first, planning it out, and making it happen took us nearly a month.
Standing out: There are lots of online learning options out there. We need to figure out what makes SmartEdu special and how to attract users.
Ensuring Content Quality: A significant challenge for any learning platform is ensuring the quality of provided content. We need to consistently update and check content to ensure information is correct, comprehensive, and accurate.
User Experience: Creating a user-friendly and compatible interface across various platforms is a challenge. We need to ensure that SmartEdu can operate on various devices and in different environments. We want it to be a smooth experience no matter where or how users use it.
Security and Privacy: With the collection of user information to personalize learning experience, we need to ensure that users' personal information is well-protected.
Enhancing and Marketing: Bringing SmartEdu to new users and keeping those who use it requires a smart plan. We want it to be fun and interesting for everyone. Recognizing and overcoming these challenges is an essential part of developing SmartEdu to provide users with the best learning experience and meet users’ diverse needs.

What we learned

We've learned many concepts, tools, and experiences related to technology while developing a product based on AI, NLP, and various programming languages. This was done within a specific and detailed schedule, collaborating remotely as a team.
Our idea is practical and has the potential for further development to benefit anyone who needs to learn, grow, and succeed.
While working on our idea, we find excellent knowledge and get more confident that it can really work.
