SmartCrop: AI-Based Crop Yield Prediction

Inspiration

Agriculture plays an important role in food security and the livelihoods of farmers. However, crop yield can be affected by several factors, including rainfall, temperature, soil conditions, and the type of crop cultivated. Uncertainty about expected yield can make agricultural planning difficult.

As an Agricultural Engineering student, I wanted to explore how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning could help address this challenge. This inspired me to develop SmartCrop, an AI-Based Crop Yield Prediction System, which aims to use agricultural data to estimate crop yield and support better farming decisions.

What it does

SmartCrop uses agricultural input data to predict crop yield through a machine learning model. The goal is to make data-driven agricultural insights more accessible and help farmers and other agricultural stakeholders plan cultivation and resource use more effectively.

How we built it

The project follows a machine learning workflow that involves preparing agricultural data, selecting relevant input features, training a prediction model, and evaluating its performance. The model uses the available dataset to learn relationships between agricultural factors and crop yield and then generates predictions based on the inputs provided.

Challenges faced

One of the main challenges was understanding how agricultural factors influence crop yield and how these relationships can be represented using machine learning. Model performance and data quality are also important challenges, since predictions depend on the reliability and representativeness of the dataset.

The project helped me understand the importance of data preparation, model evaluation, and selecting suitable machine learning techniques for agricultural problems.

What I learned

Through this project, I explored the practical application of machine learning in agriculture and learned how data-driven approaches can contribute to smarter farming. I also gained experience in connecting my Agricultural Engineering background with technology to explore solutions for real-world agricultural challenges.

Future scope

Future improvements could include training and validating the model using reliable real-world agricultural data, incorporating additional soil and weather parameters, and developing a user-friendly interface through which farmers can access crop yield estimates.
