SmartCoupon Wallet - Project Story

Inspiration
The idea started from a very common frustration: losing out on great discounts simply because we forgot to use a coupon before it expired.
One of us had a food delivery coupon for ₹200 OFF, but it expired unnoticed. Another missed out on a 20% shopping discount because it was buried under endless promotional emails. We realized this was not just our problem — it’s a pain point for almost every online shopper.
That’s when we thought:
If digital wallets can store our money and cards, why not create a digital wallet for coupons?
What it does
SmartCoupon Wallet is like a personal savings assistant. It:
- Collects all your coupons in one place
- Auto-imports them from emails/notifications
- Categorizes them into Food, Travel, Shopping, Entertainment
- Adds tags like Cashback, Free Delivery, 20% OFF
- Sends timely reminders before expiry
- Uses AI to suggest the best coupon at checkout
How we built it
We wanted SmartCoupon Wallet to be simple for users but powerful inside.
- Frontend: React.js → fast, responsive, and user-friendly UI
- Backend: FastAPI (Python) with PostgreSQL
- AI/NLP: Hugging Face transformers for classifying & extracting coupon details
- Notifications: Firebase Cloud Messaging for expiry alerts
- Security: Coupons stored with AES encryption + OAuth 2.0 login
Challenges we ran into
Building the project wasn’t easy. Some hurdles we faced:
- Parsing different coupon formats from emails and notifications
- Training our AI search engine to understand natural language
- Ensuring privacy while still allowing anonymous analytics for businesses
- Synchronizing multiple parts of the system under time pressure
Accomplishments we’re proud of
- A working prototype app that actually reminds users about coupons
- Our AI-powered search that can filter coupons by expiry date, discount, or type
- A business model that balances user needs with merchant benefits
- The fact that our idea went from a problem in daily life → to a real working solution
What we learned
- The importance of UX design — the simpler the app, the more people will use it
- How to connect AI with daily life problems like coupon management
- Balancing technical challenges with business goals
- Collaboration — every member’s skill added a crucial piece to the project
What’s next
We don’t want to stop at just a coupon organizer. The future roadmap:
- Beta Launch for students and young professionals
- Partnerships with e-commerce & food delivery companies
- Browser Extension that auto-suggests coupons at checkout
- Fintech Assistant Mode — loyalty cards, cashback tracking, group savings goals
In the long run, SmartCoupon Wallet will not only help people save money but also evolve into a personalized financial companion.
