Inspiration

SmartCFO was inspired by the struggles of freelancers and small business owners who spend hours every week on bookkeeping, invoicing, and tax reporting. These tasks are often tedious, error-prone, and take time away from growing a business. We wanted to create a tool that simplifies finances and provides actionable insights through AI, so owners can focus on what really matters.

What it does

SmartCFO is an AI-powered virtual CFO that automates financial management:

Generate and send invoices instantly Track and categorize expenses automatically Produce VAT returns and financial reports in seconds Provide real-time insights and projections through a conversational interface

Users can ask questions like: “How much did I spend on marketing this month?” and receive instant, actionable answers.

How I built it

Frontend: React.js (web), React Native (mobile) Backend: Node.js with Express.js AI & Automation: Python, OpenAI API Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB Cloud & Integrations: AWS, Stripe API I combined modern web and mobile frameworks with AI to make a seamless, interactive experience for small business owners.

Challenges I ran into

Designing a simple interface for complex financial data Ensuring real-time accuracy in invoices, expenses, and cash flow projections Training the AI to understand natural-language financial queries reliably

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Launched a fully functional AI-powered virtual CFO within 8 months Simplified complex finance workflows into a conversation-based interface Enabled small business owners to save hours each week and reduce errors

What I learned

Building SmartCFO taught me that technology alone isn’t enough. Understanding user pain points, reducing friction, and creating trustworthy insights are just as important as the AI itself.

We’re expanding AI capabilities, adding bank integrations, and rolling out smarter predictive analytics to help small business owners plan, grow, and succeed with confidence.
