Inspiration:

Small businesses often struggle to manage customer enquiries, product questions, and complaints efficiently. We wanted to create a simple digital solution that helps businesses organize customer support, provide useful product information, and improve follow-up. This inspired us to build SmartCare AI, a customer-support prototype designed around practical small-business needs.

What it does:

SmartCare AI provides a simple customer-support experience through a web application. Its key features include:

  • Product assistance:Customers can ask questions about products and receive helpful responses.
  • Product recommendations: Customers can explore suitable products based on their needs.
  • Complaint recording: Customers can submit complaints with their contact details and receive a unique reference ID.
  • Owner dashboard: Business owners can view recorded complaints, review customer information, and track complaint status.
  • Persistent complaint records: Complaint information is stored in a PostgreSQL database. The prototype uses SmartCare Supply Co. as a sample business to demonstrate the customer-support workflow.

How we built it:

We built SmartCare AI using a modern web technology stack:

  • React and Vite for the interactive frontend.
  • Node.js and Express for the backend API.
  • PostgreSQL for storing complaint records.
  • Vercel for frontend deployment.
  • Render for backend hosting. We developed a customer interface and an owner dashboard, connected them to backend endpoints, and used a sample product catalogue and business information to demonstrate the core experience.

Challenges we ran into:

One of our main challenges was connecting the frontend, backend, and database reliably across separate hosting platforms. We also encountered deployment and configuration issues while getting the application to work beyond the local development environment. Another challenge was ensuring that complaint records could be retrieved and displayed consistently. Working through these issues helped us understand the importance of testing the complete application workflow rather than checking individual components alone.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

We are proud to have built and deployed a working customer-support prototype that brings product assistance and complaint management together in one interface. We successfully connected the frontend to a hosted backend, integrated persistent complaint storage, and created an owner dashboard that displays recorded customer issues. We are also proud of turning a practical business problem into a demonstrable web application.

What I learned:

Building SmartCare AI strengthened our understanding of full-stack development, REST API integration, database persistence, and cloud deployment. We learned that a successful application requires more than an attractive interface: its backend operations, error handling, and data flow must also work reliably. We also learned the value of starting with a focused scope, testing features individually, and improving a prototype through practical feedback.

What's next for SmartCare AI:

Our next goal is to make SmartCare AI more reliable and useful for real small businesses. Planned improvements include:

  • More robust complaint status updates and refresh functionality.
  • Secure owner authentication and access control.
  • More advanced AI-powered responses and context-aware product recommendations.
  • Better error handling and customer feedback.
  • Customer-support integrations with channels such as WhatsApp and email.
  • Reporting tools that help businesses identify recurring customer issues and improve service quality. Our long-term vision is to make accessible, intelligent customer support easier for small businesses to adopt and maintain.
