Every single day an average of 4.5 pounds of trash is generated per person, which means a city with 6 million people could be generating around 27 million pounds of waste.

Handling this elevated amount of waste is something really hard to handle, and the inefficiency around the process could contribute making the problem bigger.

What it does

We decided to control the problem from the source, and that is why decided to build the SmartCan, a smart device that keeps track of the trash levels in monitored containers. Is a portable device that could be plugged into cans and containers, which allow us to real-time monitor the source of the problem.

How I built it

Is an IoT device that uses sensors to measure waste levels on containers, it relays on a microcontroller unit over a WiFi connection. In that way we can always report in real time does metrics that will help to take out down the waste problem in our cities.
