Inspiration The inspiration for SmartBins came from the growing need for efficient waste management solutions. We wanted to create a system that could automate the sorting of waste, reducing human error and promoting recycling.
What it does SmartBins uses AI to sort waste automatically, making recycling effortless. Vendors can create awareness programs and post waste management requirements, volunteers can join events and report issues, and admins manage tasks seamlessly.
How we built it We built SmartBins using a combination of technologies. The frontend is developed with HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. The backend uses PHP and Python, with advanced garbage sorting powered by YOLOv5 and TensorFlow. Data is stored in a MySQL database.
Challenges we ran into We faced several challenges, including integrating the YOLOv5 model for accurate waste detection and ensuring real-time performance. Coordinating between different modules and ensuring seamless communication between vendors, volunteers, and admins was also complex.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We’re proud of creating a functional and user-friendly platform that addresses a critical environmental issue. Successfully implementing AI for waste sorting and building a comprehensive dashboard for admins were significant achievements.
What we learned We learned a lot about AI and its applications in real-world scenarios, as well as the importance of seamless user interfaces and efficient backend management. The project also taught us valuable lessons in teamwork and problem-solving.
What's next for SmartBins We plan to enhance the AI algorithms for even more accurate sorting, expand the platform to support more cities, and introduce new features like real-time waste level monitoring and predictive maintenance.
