Inspiration
Volatile electricity prices and growing battery adoption create a strong need for AI-based tools that help users decide when charging a battery is economically most advantageous.
What it does
SmartBESS is an AI-driven decision-support concept that estimates the economic benefit of charging a battery at different hours, taking into account the user’s expected energy needs, and recommends the most cost-effective charging periods.
How we built it
We designed a conceptual architecture combining AI-based demand and price forecasting with an optimization framework to evaluate alternative battery charging strategies.
Challenges we ran into
Modeling uncertainty in price forecasts, defining realistic battery constraints and translating AI predictions into clear economic recommendations were key challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed a coherent system concept capable of comparing the economic value of charging decisions across different time periods.
What we learned
We learned how strongly battery profitability depends on price dynamics and how forecasting and optimization must work together for effective decision support.
What's next for SmartBESS
We will implement and validate the AI forecasting and optimization algorithms using real market data and refine the platform as an intelligent decision-support tool.
