Inspiration

I wanted to build a small and simple AI assistant that works like a messenger. Most AI tools feel too heavy or overloaded, so I thought it would be cool to have something minimalistic, fast, and easy to use on the desktop. The idea was basically: “What if chatting with an AI felt as simple as chatting in Telegram?”

What it does

SmartAssistant is a lightweight desktop app where you can chat with an AI in a clean, messenger-style interface. You can ask questions, get explanations, summaries, or just use it as a quick helper without opening a browser.

How we built it

I made a small desktop UI in Python and connected it to a FastAPI backend. The backend sends requests to a cloud AI model and returns the responses. The whole setup is simple on purpose, so the app loads fast and stays responsive. The design is inspired by messenger apps — clean and minimal.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges were making the UI look clean, handling message formatting, and keeping everything lightweight. Also, connecting the frontend and backend smoothly took some time. But overall, the project came together well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud that the app feels simple and pleasant to use. The interface is clean, the backend works reliably, and the whole thing runs without unnecessary complexity. It’s exactly the kind of tool I wanted to build.

What we learned

I learned how to structure a small FastAPI backend, how to design a minimal chat UI, and how to integrate cloud AI into a desktop app. I also got better at keeping things simple instead of overengineering.

What's next

In the future, I want to add message history, maybe local search, better UI animations, and voice input. I also want to package the app so it’s easy to install on Windows or Linux.
