☀️ Smart Weather Gadget for Jira
🌟 Inspiration
With distributed teams becoming the norm, understanding local weather conditions helps in empathizing with team members across regions. Whether someone’s productivity is impacted by a snowstorm or planning an office meetup on a sunny day—context matters. We wanted to bring that context right inside Jira, where team planning actually happens.
💡 What it does
The Smart Weather Gadget is a Jira dashboard widget built using Atlassian Forge that fetches and displays real-time weather data based on the city selected by the user during gadget configuration.
Key Features:
- 🌍 Select any city and get current weather details (temperature, humidity, condition).
- 🖼️ Minimal UI designed to blend into Jira dashboards.
- 🔁 Auto-refresh for updated data.
- 🧑💻 Useful for team leads, remote workers, or on-site planning.
🛠 How we built it
- Platform: Atlassian Forge
- Template:
jira-dashboard-gadgetwithCustom UI(React) - Frontend: React, HTML, CSS
- Backend: Forge resolver using
@forge/apito securely fetch data - External API: openweathermap.com
- Config Module: Allows user to choose city,Country during gadget setup
We used Forge’s modular architecture to separate the configuration interface from the display module and wrote backend logic to securely call the weather API without exposing API keys.
🧗 Challenges we ran into
- ⚠️ Permission Errors: Managing access to Jira APIs and external APIs within Forge's strict permissions model.
- 🔁 Real-time updates: Forge gadgets are sandboxed, so building a reliable refresh mechanism needed creative workarounds.
- 🌐 Fetching configuration state dynamically across dashboard and editor views.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working Forge dashboard gadget with full external API integration.
- Learned and implemented dynamic configuration using Forge's
editmodule. - Delivered a smooth user experience inside a Jira dashboard.
📚 What we learned
- How to use Forge's
resolverfor server-side logic with external APIs. - How to integrate configuration state using Forge
editmodules. - Understanding Forge’s permissions and deployment lifecycle.
- Deploying apps seamlessly in Jira without managing hosting or infrastructure.
🔮 What's next for Smart Weather Gadget
- 🌤️ Add support for multiple cities and weather forecasts.
- ⏰ Let users set weather alerts/reminders for their local timezone.
- 🌎 Automatically detect location via IP or Jira user profile.
- 🧠 Integrate AI to give planning recommendations based on weather (e.g., "Delay outdoor team event").
