Inspiration

India generates large amounts of waste every day, yet most of it is not segregated properly. Even though people care about cleanliness, there is no system that guides, motivates, or rewards them to follow segregation rules. Waste continues to get mixed at homes and public places, while Urban Local Bodies struggle to track bin status, waste quality, and collection efficiency. Without real-time data, bins overflow, recyclable materials reach landfills, and waste processing becomes costly and inefficient.

Waste segregation in cities doesn’t fail because solutions don’t exist—it fails because citizens are not actively engaged, monitored, or motivated to follow them. Our platform solves this by using a mobile-first approach with QR tracking, gamification, and real-time transparency. Citizens receive instant feedback and redeemable rewards for correct disposal, while authorities get live analytics and optimized waste routes.

By combining participation with data, we make waste management transparent, rewarding, and truly smart.

What it does

Our platform makes waste segregation simple, rewarding, and fully traceable. Citizens scan the QR code on any community bin, select their waste type, and instantly receive feedback verified by sensor or bin data. They earn redeemable rewards for correct disposal and can track their waste habits over time.

ULB workers get a real-time map showing bin status, overflow alerts, pickup routes, and QR-based proof of collection. Administrators receive dashboards with segregation scores, area-wise analytics, workforce performance, and downloadable reports to optimize operations.

In one ecosystem, citizens are motivated to dispose correctly, workers are guided efficiently, and authorities make transparent, data-driven decisions—resulting in cleaner and smarter cities.

How we built it

We built the platform using Base 44’s AI development tools, which generated the app’s structure, UI screens, and multi-user flow based on detailed prompts. We customized the generated code to integrate QR-based disposal tracking, a reward system, and real-time bin analytics. We trained a basic AI waste classifier using Teachable Machine and connected it with simulated IoT sensor data through cloud APIs. Using Base 44 allowed us to focus on innovation, gamification, and data logic rather than slow manual coding.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenge was designing a solution that works without coding. We had to simplify complex waste-sorting logic into visual workflows and choose tools that could handle real-time data. Making the system user-friendly for both citizens and ULB workers also required careful thinking and redesign.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a working end-to-end waste management system using no-code tools, integrating QR-based tracking, real-time bin updates, and user rewards. We’re proud that our solution is affordable, scalable, and encourages community participation through gamification. Our idea stands out because it transforms waste segregation into an engaging, reward-driven habit instead of a forced rule. By combining citizen participation with real-time data insights for ULBs, our solution bridges the gap between people and policy in a smart, practical way.

What we learned

Building this project taught us how powerful no-code tools can be in solving real-world problems quickly. We learned to integrate IoT sensor data with a mobile-first interface, manage real-time updates, and design user journeys that motivate people through rewards and transparency. Most importantly, we realized that smart waste management isn’t just a technical challenge — it’s about influencing behavior. Creating a system that makes citizens want to segregate waste showed us how technology and psychology together can drive impactful change.

What's next for Smart Waste Segregation & Monitoring

Our next step is to expand the platform beyond pilot usage and integrate it with municipal waste systems across multiple cities. We plan to introduce dynamic reward partnerships with local businesses, predictive waste analytics using AI, and multilingual app support for wider adoption. Future updates will also include AI-based bin overflow predictions, citizen rating for waste services, and NFC-enabled bin scanning for faster verification. With these upgrades, we aim to make smart waste management a standard feature in cleaner, data-driven, and community-powered cities.
