Inspiration
Air pollution is increasing due to climate change. 25 million people have asthma. We want houses to be pollution free, and clean themselves automatically.
What it does
Whenever the grove sensor on the intel edison detects air pollution, the app can automatically connect to smartthings to turn on the fans in the house and nest to turn on the hvac fan.
How we built it
We used a intel edison, a lcd screen a air pollution sensor, a buzzer, and some leds.
Challenges we ran into
The lcd screen would only work on 5v, but the temperature sensor would only work on 3.3v, o we needed to use both the 3.3 and 5v voltage regulators. We had trouble with nodejs running out of cache.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It all works at the end! Our app can connect to smartthings and nest. The live temperature sensor data can be viewed online and can live populate a graph from the edison.
What we learned
We learned how hard the intel edison was to use because for initial setup after every boot you had to connect to it through a serial connection through usb.
What's next for Smart Ventilation
We think that we can add more robust air pollution sensors and make our app work on more services like belkin wemo and insteon.
