Inspiration
Coming from a healthcare tech background, I was intrigued by the tech behind all of the medical infrastructure in the hospitals. My teammate also shares the same passion. Thus, we want to create something that would help improve the healthcare system in Canada.
What it does
The app takes in a patient's information and determines which vaccines they are eligible for, have missed, and are not eligible for. It also has a notification reminder if there is a vaccine scheduled for the next 30 days.
How we built it
We built it using Java, Github, and VSCode
Challenges we ran into
We tried using Drools, an enterprise standard for a business system management framework, but it has a learning curve too steep for a hackathon. Next, we tried using easy rules, but we were unable to get it working. So we used custom logic to determine the vaccine.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) working, with some minor refinement. We got this working with just a small team of two people.
What we learned
Because of the knowledge gap, I learned a lot more about the Java language and the live share feature on VSCode. My partner learned about rules engines.
What's next for Smart Vaccine App
Adding more vaccines and refining the UI to be more user-friendly.
