Inspiration : The Odisha State Government expressed its concerns over cases of severe traffic congestion and an alarming rate of increased accidental deaths at the road junctions despite the adoption of traffic calming measures at those places. In order to reduce the rate of these daily occurring accidents ,our team decided to create the following application Smart Traffic.

What it does : The application helps control traffic significantly and smartly by finding out the routes with the most and the least traffic of all the four directions at a particular signal. The route with the most traffic would be given an extended time until it gets cleared, while the one with less traffic would get comparatively less time, owing to it's less vehicle count.

How we built it : The application has been built using C language, using structures and linked lists.

The range of traffic in all directions would be taken in as input and accordingly time would be allotted for the respective routes.(The problem of calculating distance could be resolved using a Machine Learning model, wherein sensors automatically provide us with a rough estimate of traffic for different routes.)

Challenges we ran into :

i)Significant amount of time was consumed in the selection of the topic, very much relevant to the state of Odisha, highlighting a major issue being faced by the natives. It was then decided to prepare a project on Smart Traffic ii)Preparation of the presentation also accounted for most of the time ,which included gathering relevant facts, statistics, articles etc.

Accomplishments that we're proud of : The application has the following advantages:-

i)Efficient traffic management by preventing congestion; ii)Helps reduce no. of deaths due to road accidents; iii)Minimizes various types of pollution including Noise(horns),Air(vehicle outlets); iv)It saves time as time allotted would be solely on the basis of traffic; v)There would be no human intervention as everything would be automatic.

What we learned : We all are aware of the traffic complication as a problem for the metropolitan cities mostly, whereas it is neglected for all other cities and regions. Odisha, one of the victims of this negligence, had suddenly recorded increased traffic casualties and accidental deaths.

Throughout the building of this project, we were informed of the overall Traffic condition of Odisha. We learnt the importance of efficient traffic management and how this plays a crucial role for the developing of Bhubaneswar into a Smart City.

What's next for Smart Traffic :

i)Building an automated Machine Learning model which could detect the no. of vehicles up to large ranges.(Which could be used to get an idea of the traffic intensity of routes) ii)Building individual roadway recommendation models, road traffic recommendation models, emergency pathway models. iii)Enabling individuals to find the shortest path between their initial and desired locations, alerting them of the traffic signals they might encounter in the process.
