🌟 Inspiration
The idea came from a very common productivity struggle: we often write down big, overwhelming tasks (e.g., "Prepare for Interview" or "Launch Marketing Campaign") but procrastinate because we don't know where to start. We wanted to build a task manager that doesn't just store tasks, but actively helps you execute them. By combining a modern web framework with OpenAI's intelligence, we created a tool that auto-deconstructs complex goals into clear, bite-sized steps instantly.
🛠️ How We Built It
We engineered the application using a robust and modern production-ready stack:
- Frontend Architecture: Built with Next.js (App Router) and TypeScript to ensure dynamic, fast rendering, clean routing, and reliable type-safety.
- Styling & UI: Styled cleanly using Tailwind CSS to provide a responsive, clutter-free user interface that keeps users focused on their productivity.
- AI Engine: Integrated OpenAI API (gpt-4o-mini) via official backend endpoints. We designed a deterministic prompt structure to ensure the model evaluates task context and strictly outputs structured JSON data for the UI to parse seamlessly.
🧠 Challenges We Ran Into & Learning Outcomes
- Handling AI Response Constraints: One major hurdle was making sure the AI consistently returned a clean JSON array instead of free-form text prose. We mastered prompt engineering by forcing specific schema guardrails and adding robust try/except fallback logic in our Next.js API routes.
- State Management & Type Safety: Managing dynamic task lists along with nested subtasks while keeping everything strictly typed in TypeScript was challenging but highly educational. We learned how to write scalable backend route handlers in Next.js.
🚀 What's Next for Smart Task Manager
We want to take this prototype to the next level by:
- Connecting a persistent database (like MongoDB or PostgreSQL) to save user data permanently.
- Adding authentication (NextAuth/Clerk) so users can securely sync their personalized boards.
- Implementing prioritization algorithms where the AI auto-arranges tasks based on urgency and deadliness.
